The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the option to question certain decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
