Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a stake approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no official statement on this. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in F1."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement signifies a significant increase in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Current Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix so far and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
