British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
